KRKD, Viewed from the South

The Knox County Flying Club is located on the SouthEast side of the Knox County Regional Airport (KRKD), Owls Head, ME. Known as a destination airport for visitors to the ‘Midcoast’ region, the airport offers hangars and a base of operations for local pilots as well as services for Charter, 135 and flight school operations and features 4,000′ and 5,400′ crossing runways with multiple instrument approaches. The airport was originally built for WW2 training with a focus on training in foggy conditions!

The Flying Club is the gathering place and hub for GA pilots on the field. We are somewhat a non-conventional flying club with many non-pilot or non-flying members in addition to our active pilots / aircraft owners that enjoy the comradery and benefits of membership in our group, including the fuel discount, weekly dinners, safety presentations and other frequent events.

Membership

The Club is open to all pilots / non- pilots and aircraft owners interested in aviation and want to help us promote General Aviation by supporting the Club and GA in the local community. Members are expected to fly safely, respect the aircraft and facilities, and contribute to the friendly culture of the club. Costs of operating the club and maintaining our aircraft are shared among members, keeping flying accessible and affordable for everyone.

The Club’s operations are supported through annual dues, our monthly (warmer months) pancake breakfasts and donations.

Benefits include:

  • Weekly gatherings of like minded aviation enthusiasts
  • A fuel discount of $1/gal for aircraft owners and operators at the Club owned fuel farm;
  • Access to our 1966 Piper Cherokee 140 (PA-28-140, registration N7565R) at a very low wet rate of $125/hr. Use the plane for local and distant flights, recurrent or primary training and to maintain currency. Great for rusty pilots!
  • Use of our clubhouse year round for socialization and use of the bathroom. Always appreciated in the colder months!

Aircraft & Flightline

The club operates a well-maintained Piper Cherokee 140 based at Knox County Regional Airport (KRKD). Our Flightline program gives members structured, easy access to the aircraft with a straightforward scheduling system — so you can plan your flying with confidence and minimal hassle.

Events

Community is at the heart of what we do. Every week we gather for casual burger-flip dinners on the field — a great chance to swap stories and stay connected. We hold monthly club meetings to discuss news and plans, and each summer we host monthly pancake breakfasts open to the public, serving as a fun fundraiser and a way to share our love of aviation with the broader community.
